Mikael Hjerm is a Professor of Sociology and Deputy Head of the Department of Sociology at Umeå University. His research focuses on attitudes, specifically prejudice, nationalism, trust, immigration, and gender, with a current emphasis on the dynamics of prejudice change within and between individuals. He leads major research initiatives such as The Evolution of Prejudice, involving over ten researchers and PhD students, and coordinates national infrastructure like the Comparative Research Centre Sweden, integrating large cross-country surveys (ESS, SHARE, ISSP).
His research is funded by prestigious bodies including the Swedish Research Council (VR), FORTE, the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare, and the Wallenberg Foundation. Notable projects include studies on the liberalizing effects of higher education, emotional well-being during economic and health crises, and the impact of political activism on anti-immigrant attitudes.
Key research groups include Political Sociology and Racism, Nationalism, Ethnicity and Migration. His work spans over two decades, with projects dating back to 2003 on topics ranging from welfare state commitment to post-Ukraine NATO membership opinions in Sweden. He has maintained leadership roles in the European Social Survey (ESS) as National Coordinator.
Publications reflect interdisciplinary approaches, blending sociology with psychology and political science to address societal challenges such as AI societal impacts, pandemic-induced academic stress, and the reliability of scientific replications.
