Maureen A. Eger is an Associate Professor (on leave) in the Department of Sociology at Umeå University, Sweden. Her research focuses on political sociology, particularly immigration, nationalism, and welfare state dynamics. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Washington and M.A. and B.A. from Stanford University. Eger’s work explores attitudes toward immigration, ethnic diversity, and the consequences of these views on social policy, voting behavior, and political institutions. She is affiliated with research groups including Political Sociology, Racism, Nationalism, Ethnicity and Migration, Social Policy and Welfare, and Sociology of Education.
Her academic career includes roles as a Fulbright Scholar at Stockholm University, visiting scholar at UC Berkeley’s Center for Right-Wing Studies, and a 2024-25 CASBS Fellow at Stanford. Current research projects include investigating tolerance’s societal role, the liberalizing effects of higher education, and the evolution of prejudice. Eger has contributed to over 50 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on topics like migration stigma, anti-immigrant sentiment, and democratic resilience.
Eger’s awards include recognition for her interdisciplinary contributions to understanding neo-nationalism and the welfare state’s adaptability. Her teaching and research emphasize comparative methodologies across diverse socio-political contexts, with a particular interest in how institutional frameworks shape public opinion and policy outcomes.
