Dr. Gillian Fergie is a Research Fellow in Public Health and Associate at the School of Social & Political Sciences at the University of Glasgow. She works at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit as a Research Associate in the Improving Healthy Public Policy Programme, where she employs qualitative and mixed methods to explore engagement with contemporary health issues and debates.
Gillian completed her MA (hons) in History and MSc in Social Science Research at the University of Glasgow. Prior to her current role, she worked as a research assistant at University College London from 2008-2010 on academic writing support projects for postgraduates.
Her research focuses on e-health, social media, health inequalities, health literacy, and public understandings of health, with particular emphasis on young people's experiences. She specializes in participatory research methods, community-engaged research, and public engagement with research. Her expertise includes qualitative methods, participatory research approaches, public engagement strategies, and media analysis.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong trajectory toward community-engaged research addressing structural determinants of health. Her work increasingly examines participatory approaches to tackle health inequalities, food insecurity, and income-related health determinants, often involving direct collaboration with affected communities, particularly young people.
Gillian leads the UKRI ESRC/AHRC funded Creative Insights project, which partners with young people in Glasgow and Leeds to develop creative responses to health inequalities. She has contributed to numerous research grants examining policy coherence, income supplementation reforms, and epidemiological trends in health inequalities.
She teaches qualitative research methods including focus group facilitation, qualitative interviewing, online research methods, and qualitative data analysis. She also conducts sessions on public engagement and public involvement in research, sharing her expertise in community-centered approaches.
