Gillian E. Gardiner

Gillian E. Gardiner is Senior Lecturer in Microbiology at SETU's Department of Science and leads the agri-food research group within the Eco-Innovation Research Centre. With over 100 publications and €7.4M in research funding, she specializes in sustainable animal production systems.

Research expertise includes:

• Alternatives to antibiotics for livestock
• Microbiome modulation in pigs
• Foodborne pathogen control
• Novel antimicrobial discovery
• Manure biosafety

Professor Gardiner teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programs in microbiology, food safety, and livestock management. She maintains extensive international collaborations with research institutions across Europe and has supervised 16 PhD students to completion. Her research has been recognized through multiple awards including the SETU Research Excellence Award (2025).
