Tim Johnson is a Professor in the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Minnesota's College of Veterinary Medicine, Twin Cities. His expertise focuses on genetic mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in Enterobacteriaceae, microbiome manipulation for animal health, and development of antibiotic alternatives. He leads the Johnson Lab, dedicated to poultry health, food safety, and pathogen ecology, with a particular emphasis on Salmonella and E. coli.
Education includes a PhD in Molecular Pathogenesis from North Dakota State University, followed by post-doctoral training at Iowa State University. His research integrates genomics, microbiology, and epidemiology to address antimicrobial resistance and improve poultry production practices.
Key research interests include microbiome-based solutions for poultry performance, probiotic development, and rapid diagnostics for high-risk pathogens. The lab collaborates closely with industry stakeholders to provide actionable insights for Minnesota's poultry sector.
Recent work emphasizes genomic epidemiology of foodborne pathogens, antibiotic alternatives, and zoonotic transmission risks. His outreach focuses on training agricultural scientists and enhancing rural Minnesota's agricultural resilience.
