Yosra A. Helmy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Veterinary Science at the University of Kentucky's Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. She is affiliated with the Gluck Equine Research Center and holds a joint appointment in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics. Her research focuses on developing antibiotic alternatives, studying antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and understanding host-pathogen interactions using molecular and omics approaches. She also investigates foodborne pathogens like Campylobacter, Salmonella, and E. coli.
Dr. Helmy earned her DVM from Suez Canal University (2004), an MSc in Veterinary Sciences (2008), a PhD from Free University of Berlin (2014), and completed a postdoc at The Ohio State University (2015–2020). Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly addressing food safety and public health challenges.
Her research interests include probiotics, antimicrobial resistance mitigation, gut microbiome modulation, and One Health strategies. She leads projects funded by organizations like the National Institute of Food and Agriculture and the Morris Animal Foundation. Notable grants include developing small molecules to combat Rhodococcus equi in foals and studying Campylobacter using probiotic Nissle E. coli.
Dr. Helmy has received several awards, including the Poster Presentation Award (2017) and Outstanding Reviewer recognition (2022). Her publications span over 99 articles, with a focus on novel therapeutics, nanotechnology applications in vaccines, and molecular epidemiology of pathogens.
Her lab collaborates broadly, addressing AMR through genomic analysis, drug discovery, and translational research. Recent work includes characterizing AMR in equine Salmonella and exploring bacteriocins for mastitis treatment in dairy cattle.
