Gillian Dooley is an Honorary Associate Professor in the Department of English at Flinders University, South Australia. She retired from her role as Special Collections Librarian at Flinders University Library in 2017 but remains actively engaged in academia. Her research focuses on intersections of music and literature, particularly Jane Austen, Iris Murdoch, and maritime explorer Matthew Flinders. She holds a Ph.D. in English from Flinders University (2001) and has held editorial roles for journals like Transnational Literature and Writers in Conversation.
- Educations: Ph.D. (Flinders University 2001), B.A. (Hons.) (Flinders University 1996), Graduate Diplomas in Library Studies (SAIT 1988) and Secretarial Studies (Canberra CAE 1978).
Her research interests span Jane Austen’s musical life, Iris Murdoch’s philosophical narratives, and Matthew Flinders’ historical legacy. She has curated the Austen family music collection and authored She Played and Sang: Jane Austen and Music (2024). Her work bridges literary analysis with musicology, emphasizing performance and archival preservation.
Dooley serves as President of the Musicological Society of Australia (SA Chapter) and chairs multiple academic committees. Awards include the Staff Award for Outstanding Contribution to Flinders University (2008). Her recent articles explore Austen’s operatic adaptations and Murdoch’s metaphysical themes.
