Gilles Ulrich is a Research Director at the Institute of Chemistry and Processes for Energy, the Environment and Health (ICPEES), a joint research unit (UMR CNRS 7515) of the CNRS and the University of Strasbourg. He leads the Organic Chemistry Group for Materials and Biology (COMBO) and holds significant leadership roles as Deputy Director of ICPEES and Director of the Doctorate School of Chemistry (ED222) at the University of Strasbourg.
Education:
- Accreditation to Direct Research (Habilitation), May 2007
- PhD in Chemistry, Louis Pasteur University, Strasbourg, France, March 1996
His primary research interests lie in the fields of heterocyclic chemistry, luminescence, boron complexes (particularly BODIPY dyes), and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). His work focuses on developing novel organic fluorescent systems for applications in materials science and biology, encompassing the synthesis of multifunctional molecules, the study of their photophysical properties using absorption and emission spectroscopies and electrochemistry, and their use in detection and labeling.
The trends in his recent publications highlight a sustained and highly influential research program centered on BODIPY dyes. His work spans from fundamental reviews on the chemistry of these dyes to the development of novel fused and paired BODIPY structures for advanced applications in n-type semiconductors and artificial light-harvesting arrays. His 2008 review on BODIPY dyes has garnered over 2000 citations, underscoring his status as a leading authority in the field. His later work on polyanils and aggregation-induced emission further demonstrates his expertise in designing materials with tailored optical properties.
Scientific Awards:
- JSPS Fellowship
Gilles Ulrich is a prolific researcher with over 155 peer-reviewed publications and 15 patents. His high h-index of 54 and over 11,500 citations are a testament to the significant impact of his work. He serves on the editorial board of the journal Dyes & Pigments. As the Director of the Doctorate School of Chemistry, he plays a crucial role in the training and mentorship of future generations of chemists in Strasbourg. He is also the group leader of the COMBO team, which includes 4 permanent staff and 5 PhD students, indicating his active role in advising and managing a research group.
