Nikola Basarić is the Head of the Laboratory of Synthetic Organic Chemistry at the Division of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry within the Ruđer Bošković Institute. His research focuses on organic chemistry, photochemistry, and the synthesis of photoactive compounds with applications in biomedical and materials science domains. Key areas include the development of fluorescent dyes, quinone methide precursors, and photoresponsive materials.
His work emphasizes photoreactivity mechanisms, including excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), anti-Kasha photochemistry, and the design of photocages for controlled release. Publications highlight studies on BODIPY-based dyes, naphthol derivatives, and their applications in cellular imaging and cancer therapy.
Basarić’s research also explores the biological activity of photochemically generated compounds, such as their antiproliferative effects on cancer cells and interactions with nucleic acids. Collaborations involve interdisciplinary projects on photodynamic therapy and drug delivery systems.
