Gilles Muller

Gilles Muller is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at San José State University (SJSU). He holds additional roles including former Associate Dean of Research (2015–2019), Department Chair (2012–2015), and Director of Nuclear Science at SJSU. His education includes a Ph.D. in Coordination Chemistry from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland (2000) and prior degrees from University Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France.

Research Interests: Muller’s work focuses on chiroptical spectroscopy, particularly Circularly Polarized Luminescence (CPL), and the design of luminescent lanthanide complexes with chiral ligands. His research explores applications in chiral recognition, materials science, and optoelectronics. Key areas include:

• Synthesis and characterization of CPL-active organic/inorganic materials
• Chiral luminescent probes for biomolecules
• Helical organic chromophores and their optoelectronic properties
• Development of chiral sensors and OLED technologies

Publications & Awards: Muller has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles. His work includes pioneering studies on CPL in lanthanide complexes and BODIPY dyes. Notable awards include the Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award (2008), multiple SJSU Research Foundation Mentoring Awards, and recognition as an ACS Ambassador.

Advising & Teams: He has mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students, many of whom have pursued advanced degrees or industry roles. His research group collaborates internationally on projects involving luminescent materials and chiroptical techniques.
