Gil Nata is an Assistant Professor at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) and an integrated researcher at the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE), Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences, University of Porto. His work bridges psychology and education, focusing on equity, policy, and methodological rigor.

His research interests include educational and social inequalities, school evaluation, intercultural and political psychology, moral development, and epistemology. He is expert in advanced quantitative methods (e.g., structural equation modeling, multilevel analysis) and qualitative techniques (interviews, focus groups, thematic analysis). His work critically examines school rankings, grade inflation, and compensatory education policies in Portugal.
The recent publications (2022–2024) reveal a strong thematic focus on PISA, educational equity, policy effectiveness, and community resilience. These works employ systematic reviews, policy analysis, and large-scale data to assess equity trends in Portugal and across Europe. Collaborative in nature, his research often involves multidisciplinary teams and international projects.

Gil Nata has led and contributed to significant research grants, including FCT-funded projects such as Equitable Schools and Equity through PISA, and the EU H2020 ISOTIS project. His research on private school grade inflation and school rankings influenced national policy, leading to invitations to present findings to the Portuguese Parliament’s Education Commission and inclusion in its annual report. He is also involved in participatory research with youth in border regions through the GROW:UP project, which aims to build community resilience and support youth pathways.
He is affiliated with CIIE/FPCEUP and conducts research in collaboration with institutions across Portugal and Europe. His work integrates theory from sociology of education, youth studies, and border studies, with a strong emphasis on actionable policy recommendations.
