Tiago Neves is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences, University of Porto, where he also serves as Director of the Doctoral Program in Education Sciences. He is an integrated member of the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE), a leading research unit in educational sciences in Portugal. His academic work is deeply rooted in the intersection of education, policy, and social justice.
Neves holds a PhD in Education Sciences from the University of Porto (2006), a Master’s in Contemporary Urban Studies from Goldsmiths, University of London (1997), and a Bachelor’s in Sociology from the University of Porto (1995). His academic journey reflects a strong interdisciplinary foundation in sociology, urban studies, and education.
His research interests focus on social and educational inequalities, educational equity, compensatory education, conflict mediation, and inclusive education. He critically examines how policies shape educational outcomes, particularly for marginalized youth. His work often involves analyzing large-scale data, such as PISA, to assess the long-term impact of educational reforms and equity initiatives.
His recent publications reveal a consistent thematic focus on educational equity, policy discourse, and youth engagement. He investigates how PISA results are interpreted and used in public debate, how extracurricular activities influence student success, and how emotions shape civic reasoning in classrooms. His work combines empirical analysis with critical policy commentary, often engaging with contemporary educational reforms in Portugal.

He is deeply involved in training young researchers and shaping doctoral education in Portugal.
He leads and participates in multiple research teams and labs, most notably within CIIE, where he contributes to communities of practice focused on educational research and intervention. His work spans national and transnational collaborations, reflecting a strong commitment to advancing knowledge on educational equity and inclusion across Europe.
