Gideon Elford is a Departmental Lecturer in Contemporary Political Theory at the University of Oxford, associated with New College and the CSSJ Political Theory Network. His work focuses on equality, agency, and freedom of expression, particularly exploring how inequalities relate to personal choices and the impact of social penalties on free speech.
He teaches undergraduate courses like Introduction to the Theory of Politics and Plato to Rousseau, as well as graduate courses including Political Theory and Research Design Preparation. His research examines the conditions under which individuals can fairly be held responsible for their choices and how non-state mechanisms like social coercion affect expressive freedoms.
Key research areas include the relationship between equality and responsibility, the legitimacy of hate speech regulation, and the philosophical foundations of distributive justice.
