Richard J. Arneson is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and holder of the Valtz Family Chair in Philosophy at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), within the Department of Philosophy in the Division of Arts and Humanities. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975 and has been a central figure in contemporary political and moral philosophy.
His research centers on ethics, social and political philosophy, with a focus on theories of social justice, distributive justice, luck egalitarianism, prioritarianism, liberalism, democracy, and cosmopolitanism. Arneson critically engages with foundational thinkers such as John Rawls, Ronald Dworkin, G. A. Cohen, and J. S. Mill, seeking to refine egalitarian theories by integrating considerations of personal responsibility, well-being, and moral desert. He is a proponent of 'desert-catering prioritarianism,' a consequentialist framework that prioritizes benefits to the worse-off while adjusting for individual desert.
His recent and forthcoming publications reflect a sustained engagement with justice, equality, and morality. Key themes across his recent articles include the moral demands of equality, critiques of patriotism, the nature of political legitimacy, and the ethical implications of distributive theories. His work often bridges abstract normative theory with practical implications for public policy and global justice.

His research is supported by ongoing writing projects, including a co-authored book with Jason Brennan on capitalism and a monograph defending prioritarianism.
