Gerry Melino is a Professor of Biochemistry and Director of the Centre “Torvergata Oncoscience Research” at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. He also leads a program at the MRC Toxicology Unit, University of Cambridge, UK. His academic credentials include an MD from the University of Rome and a PhD from Imperial College London. He holds honorary doctorates and titles from institutions worldwide, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Louisiana State University.
His research focuses on Programmed Cell Death in cancer, neural, and epidermal models, with emphasis on the molecular mechanisms of the p53/p63/p73 family in response to DNA damage. He has published over 600 papers (H-index 103, 53,500 citations) and pioneered studies on apoptosis and transcriptional regulation in cancer biology.
Melino is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of high-impact journals: Cell Death & Differentiation (IF 8.5), Cell Death & Disease (IF 6.0), and Cell Death & Discovery (IF 3.0). He has served as President of the European Cell Death Organization and received major awards including the Feltrinelli Prize and membership in the Accademia Lincei and Academia Europaea.
