Gerry Melino is a Visiting Professor at the School of Medicine, holding academic and leadership roles across multiple institutions. He earned an M.D. from the University of Rome (1978) and a Ph.D. from the University of London, UK (1984). His research focuses on cancer genetics, pathology, molecular biology, neuroscience, and toxicology, with significant contributions to brain research and biotechnology.
Prof. Melino has served as Department Director and Professor at the University of Rome ‘Tor Vergata’ (Italy), Programme Leader at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Toxicology Unit (Leicester, UK), and Scientific Director of the European Brain Research Institute (Rome, Italy). He advises prominent organizations including the Scientific Advisory Board of Biotech Companies (e.g., EiRx Therapeutics, Capgene) and government bodies like Ireland’s SFI.
He is a recipient of the prestigious 2009 Feltrinelli Prize (awarded by Italy’s Accademia dei Lincei) and the 2010 Antonini Award. His work bridges academic research with industry collaboration, emphasizing translational medicine and interdisciplinary innovation.
