Gerhard Conrad is a Visiting Professor in Intelligence Studies at King’s College London’s Department of War Studies, School of Security Studies. He retired in late 2019 as Director of the EU Intelligence Analysis and Situation Centre (EU INTCEN) but remains active in academia, teaching in the Master's Program for Intelligence and Security Studies (MISS) at Berlin’s Federal University for Administrative Science. His career includes roles as a senior member of Germany’s BND, UN mediator under Secretaries-General Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-moon, and advisor to the German government on establishing foreign policy analysis centers. He contributes to the intergovernmental Intelligence College in Europe (ICE) and the Advisory Board for King’s “Learning to Learn in an Era of Surprise” project.
Dr. Conrad holds a PhD in Oriental Studies, International Politics, and International Law from Bonn University. His research focuses on intelligence governance in Germany and the EU, European intelligence cooperation, Middle Eastern politics, and historical Islamic legal studies. He is a member of the “Gesprächskreis Nachrichtendienste in Deutschland” and collaborates with the Research Centre for Defence Studies (CDS) and King’s Centre for the Study of Intelligence.
His recent work includes contributions to the EEAS 2.0 Task Force (2020) and forthcoming publications on EU intelligence support and the future of European intelligence services. He advises on intelligence production in foreign policy-making and has published extensively on topics ranging from Islamic legal history to contemporary security governance.
