Prof. Gerd Seidel is a distinguished Professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin's Faculty of Law since 1983, holding the Chair for Public Law, International and European Law since 1991. He retired as a full professor in 2008 but remains active in research and publications. His academic career includes a State Examination in Law (1968), Doctorate (Dr. jur., 1971), and Habilitation (1980).
His research focuses on International Law, Constitutional Law, and Human Rights, with emphasis on UN Charter principles, European Law, and global governance challenges. Notable works analyze contemporary conflicts (Crimean conflict, South China Sea disputes), UN reforms, and legal frameworks governing piracy and maritime terrorism. His 1996 Handbook of Fundamental and Human Rights remains a key reference.
Publications span legal analyses of armed conflicts, state sovereignty debates, and human rights implementation.
