Francesca Capone

Francesca Capone is an Associate Professor of International Law at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, where she has held academic roles since 2014. She earned a Law Degree from the University of Naples Federico II and a Joint Ph.D. from Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and Tilburg University. Her research focuses on international humanitarian law, terrorism law, and human rights, with a particular emphasis on child victims of armed conflict and foreign fighters' legal challenges. She has been involved in EU-funded projects on CBRN crisis management and water scarcity, contributing to policy documents and legal frameworks.

Her notable works include Reparations for Child Victims of Armed Conflict (2017), which received the Ciardi Prize, and co-edited volumes on foreign fighters under international law. Capone has taught at institutions like Leiden University and UCL, designing courses on human rights, transitional justice, and international law. Her recent publications address dual-use objects in warfare, the legal status of foreign fighters’ families, and the application of Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights in child-related disputes.

Capone’s research projects include analyzing legal frameworks for emergency response, CBRN threats, and disaster risk management. She has published over 70 articles and book chapters, reflecting her expertise in international law’s evolving challenges.
