Gerasimos Makris serves as a Professor in the Department of Social Anthropology at the School of Social Sciences, Panteion University, specializing in the anthropological study of religious phenomena and cultural systems across global contexts.
His research spans critical areas including Anthropology of Religion, Witchcraft, Spirit Possession, and comparative analysis of Islam, Sufism, Christianity, Protestantism, and Eastern Orthodoxy, with focused investigations into Conversion dynamics, Diaspora communities, Secularism, and Muslim migration patterns across the Middle East, North Africa, and transnational settings. His methodological approach emphasizes ethnographic fieldwork in both Western and non-Western societies.
Professor Makris teaches core courses including Anthropology of Religion and Symbolic Systems, Anthropology of Islamic Societies, Ethnography of non-Western Societies, Ethnography of the Middle-East, and postgraduate-level Symbolic Systems and Religious Movements. His academic work demonstrates consistent thematic coherence across publications and teaching, with significant contributions to understanding religious syncretism and identity formation in migratory contexts.
