Dr. Gerardo Ferbeyre is a Full Professor at the University of Montreal's Faculty of Medicine, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine. His research focuses on cellular senescence, cancer biology, and molecular mechanisms of aging, particularly how oncogenes and DNA damage activate senescence pathways. He leads a multidisciplinary team investigating senescence-associated secretory phenotypes, ribosomal stress, and therapeutic targets like metformin and senolytics. Collaborations include the Research Center of the University of Montreal Hospital Center (CRCHUM) and the AIDS and Infectious Diseases Network (AIDS/ID). Key areas include senescence's role in cancer suppression, metabolic reprogramming, and senolytic drug development. His work bridges basic science with clinical implications in oncology and aging.
- Research Themes: Senescence Biology, Oncogene-Induced Stress, PML Nuclear Bodies
- Techniques: Molecular biology, cell signaling analysis, drug screening
Recent studies highlight senescence’s connection to mitochondrial function, ribosome biogenesis defects, and how metabolic pathways like NAD+ regulation influence senescence bypass. His lab explores translational research, including biguanide-PROTACs for pancreatic cancer and senolytic therapies for age-related diseases.
Key collaborations include work with Professors François Major (miRNA engineering), Ivan Topisirovic (metabolism), and Michael Pollak (metformin studies). Funding includes grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and industry partnerships.
