Gerard McCormack is a Professor of International Business Law at the University of Leeds' School of Law, part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. He previously held positions at the University of Manchester, University of Essex (as Dean), and taught at Queen's University Belfast and the University of Southampton. His expertise spans private international law, business law, comparative bankruptcy law, corporate governance, banking law (including Islamic banking), and property law. He has conducted extensive research on international insolvency frameworks, particularly focusing on EU harmonization, cross-border insolvency, and corporate restructuring.
His research has led to notable publications, including EU Insolvency Law: Cross Border Insolvency Law in Comparative Focus (2022) and The European Restructuring Directive (2021). He has led projects funded by the UK's ESRC (e.g., 'Boosting Growth through Strengthening Investor and Creditor Protection in China') and the European Commission, analyzing insolvency law disparities and their impact on economic growth. His work emphasizes aligning insolvency law with EU growth strategies to ensure adaptable, fair, and sustainable economic systems.
McCormack has also been a Visiting Professor in Singapore and a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Bremen. He teaches postgraduate courses on international corporate rescue, insolvency law, and secured credit law. His current research includes the European Insolvency Regulation, comparative insolvency law, and the internationalization of secured credit frameworks. He supervises PhD students in areas like cross-border insolvency and corporate governance.
