Dr. Georgios Papanicolaou is an Associate Professor at Northumbria Law School, Northumbria University. His research focuses on the political economy of policing, organized crime, irregular migration, and human trafficking, emphasizing transnational contexts. He holds degrees from the University of Athens and the University of Edinburgh.
Education: PhD in Criminology (2008) from Northumbria University, MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice (2000) from the University of Edinburgh, LLM in Criminology (1999) and LLB (1996) from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
Research Interests: Political economy of policing, organized crime in illegal markets, human smuggling/trafficking, and strategies for police reform. He explores how policing intersects with neoliberalism, democracy, and colonial legacies. Recent work includes analyses of post-pandemic youth-police dynamics in Greece and critiques of U.S. trafficking policies.
