Georgiann Davis is an Associate Professor and Undergraduate Director in the Department of Sociology at the University of New Mexico. Her research focuses on the intersection of medical knowledge, gender, and bodily inequality, particularly through her work on intersex activism and the social construction of medical diagnoses. She is the author of the award-winning book Contesting Intersex: The Dubious Diagnosis, which critiques the medicalization of intersex bodies. Davis is also a scholar-activist, serving as former board president of interACT: Advocates for Intersex Youth and past-president of InterConnect.
Her education includes a PhD in Sociology from the University of Illinois at Chicago (2011). Key research interests include the sociology of health and medicine, gender studies, intersectionality, and the ethics of medical terminology. She has received accolades such as the 2017 ASA Distinguished Book Award and the 2016 Donald Light Award for Medical Sociology.
Her publications span academic journals like Gender & Society and American Journal of Bioethics, as well as popular outlets like Ms. Magazine. Davis teaches courses on gender, the sociology of the body, and social statistics. Her advocacy work emphasizes ending non-consensual medical interventions on intersex youth and promoting bodily autonomy.
