Dr Georgia Andreou is a Lecturer in Archaeology & Sustainability at the University of Southampton, specializing in Maritime Archaeology and Landscape Archaeology. Her research focuses on endangered maritime heritage in the Eastern Mediterranean and Arabian Peninsula, particularly through the Maritime Endangered Archaeology (MarEA) Project. She employs GIS and remote sensing to document vulnerable sites, including projects assessing tropical cyclone impacts in Oman and maritime heritage in Gaza’s ecological/humanitarian crisis. Her work critiques traditional environmental narratives in archaeological data and explores big data ethics in cultural heritage studies.
She co-directs the Kalavasos and Maroni Built Environment Project, excavating Late Bronze Age sites in Cyprus. Teaching roles include modules on ancient seafaring, Egyptian archaeology, and heritage politics at the University of Southampton and UCL. External roles include peer review for journals like Journal of Maritime Archaeology and speaking engagements on topics like cyclone impacts and coastal erosion in archaeological contexts.
Key projects include establishing Gaza’s maritime heritage baseline using remote sensing and in situ documentation, as well as collaborative initiatives for sustainable heritage management in conflict zones. Her work bridges archaeology, environmental science, and policy, addressing contemporary challenges like climate change and urbanization impacts on cultural heritage.
