Rodrigo Ortiz Vazquez is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, specializing in Maritime Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Preservation. He is affiliated with the Centre for Maritime Archaeology, Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, and the Nature-Based Ocean Solutions group. His research focuses on endangered maritime cultural heritage in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), climate change impacts on coastal archaeology, and geospatial documentation for marine planning. He has contributed to projects such as the MarEA initiative, which evaluates and protects endangered archaeological sites in Bahrain and the MENA region.
His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches, combining geospatial technologies with archaeological methodologies to address challenges posed by urbanization and environmental changes. He has collaborated extensively with international teams, including projects in North Morocco and Oaxaca, Mexico. His publications highlight strategies for heritage management, climate adaptation, and the intersection of cultural and natural heritage in marine protected areas.
Rodrigo is actively involved in external roles, such as speaking at conferences related to the MarEA Project in 2020. He maintains a focus on enhancing marine planning through archaeological documentation and advocating for the conservation of vulnerable coastal sites.
