Dr Stephanie Blankshein is a maritime and landscape archaeologist and heritage scientist at the University of Southampton. As Facility Manager of the UKRI-RICHeS-funded Coastal & Inland Waters Heritage Science Facility, she leads cutting-edge research on coastal and freshwater heritage using 3D scanning, drones, and machine learning. Previously, she conducted postdoctoral research on the AHRC-funded 'Islands of Stone' project, investigating Neolithic artificial islands (crannogs) in the Outer Hebrides. Her work integrates geospatial analysis, remote sensing, and computational methods to bridge natural and cultural heritage. She holds a PhD and MSc in Maritime Archaeology (University of Southampton) and an MFA in Historic Preservation. Awards include an Associate Fellowship of Advance HE (2024) and the Royal Archaeological Institute’s Master's Dissertation Prize (2014–2015).

Research Focus: Combines digital methods (photogrammetry, GIS, machine learning) with fieldwork in coastal and underwater environments. Current projects include freshwater archaeological radar surveys and accessible heritage platforms for the Calanais Visitor Centre. Past work spans Europe, including underwater excavations in Spain and heritage surveys in Bulgaria.
Teaching & Training: Leads modules on archaeological field methods and scientific diving. Delivers workshops on heritage science techniques in the UK, Cyprus, and Croatia.
Labs/Teams: Manages the Coastal & Inland Waters Heritage Science Facility and co-leads the AHRC Impact grant for public heritage engagement.
