Alexandra Karamitrou

Dr. Alexandra Karamitrou is a Lecturer in Archaeology and AI at the University of Southampton's Faculty of Arts and Humanities, specializing in the application of artificial intelligence to archaeological and marine heritage challenges. Her interdisciplinary work bridges geophysics, computer vision, and cultural heritage preservation.

Her research focuses on Artificial Intelligence and Image Processing algorithms applied to Geophysical Archaeology, particularly in shipwreck detection and Crannog identification. Using deep learning and convolutional neural networks, she analyzes remotely sensed geophysical data to solve complex underwater cultural heritage problems. Current projects include global decommissioning practices of offshore structures funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering.
