Mate Parica is an Associate Professor at the Department of Archaeology, University of Zadar, where he has been employed since 2007. He teaches courses on Social and religious symbols of the Adriatic world in the Bronze Age, Port installations and coastal structures, Bronze Age of Europe, and Bronze Age in the Adriatic across all academic levels.
He earned his graduate degree in archaeology and history from the University of Zadar in 2006 and completed his Ph.D. at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb in 2014 with research on Archaeological traces of stonework in Dalmatia from prehistoric times to the end of the Middle Ages.
Parica specializes in underwater and terrestrial archaeology of the Adriatic, focusing on Neolithic and Bronze Age periods. His research encompasses submerged prehistoric settlements, port installations, stone quarry archaeology, and maritime cultural landscapes. Fieldwork highlights include extensive underwater surveys at Soline (Korčula), Resnik (Hellenistic port), and Pakoštane (late antique shipwreck and saltworks), alongside terrestrial excavations at sites like Nadin, Starigrad, and Zadar-Jazine.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent focus on submerged Neolithic sites in the Croatian Adriatic, particularly around Korčula and Zadar regions. His work integrates underwater survey techniques with studies of port facilities and stone working, demonstrating how prehistoric communities utilized coastal resources and maritime networks. Key recurring themes include salt production at Sveti Juraj-Lisac and Roman port infrastructure along the Dalmatian coast.
As principal investigator for projects like RED (Multidisciplinary fieldwork at Plemići Bay, Ražanac), he has secured research funding for harbor installation studies and pottery workshop analyses. His field methodology combines traditional excavation with aerial photography and multidisciplinary approaches to underwater cultural heritage preservation.
Parica's laboratory work involves collaboration with Croatian underwater archaeology teams for site documentation and conservation, particularly for submerged artifacts from rescue excavations. His ongoing research focuses on integrating paleoenvironmental data with archaeological findings to reconstruct prehistoric coastal adaptations in the Adriatic.
