Dr. George Zacharopoulos is a Lecturer in Psychology at Swansea University's School of Psychology, part of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science. He holds a PhD in Psychology from Cardiff University (2017), an MSc in Neuroscience from University College London (2013), and a BSc in Psychology from the University of Cyprus (2011). Previously, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Karolinska Institute (2016–2017) and the University of Oxford (2017–2020).
His research focuses on investigating neural circuits underlying high-level cognition tasks (e.g., mathematics, working memory) and enhancing these circuits via cognitive training and non-invasive brain stimulation. Key areas of expertise include cognitive neuroscience, cognitive control, brain plasticity, and neuroimaging.
Dr. Zacharopoulos has been awarded the 2019 Recognition Prize for Excellence from the University of Oxford and the Themistoklis Dervis Prize for academic and social contributions during his undergraduate studies. He teaches modules on cognitive neuroscience and higher-level cognitive processes, including 'Critical Issues in Cognitive Neuroscience' and 'Cognition II: Higher Level Processes.'
He leads the grant-funded project 'The detection of metabolite concentration using DW-CRT MEGA-SLASER sequence' (2021, £8500) and has presented invited lectures on topics such as 'The Neurochemistry of Mathematical Development.'
