George R. Buchanan

Dr. George R. Buchanan is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UT Southwestern) in Dallas, Texas. He has been actively involved in pediatric hematology-oncology since 1977, currently serving as Director of the Barrett Family Center of Pediatric Oncology and holding the Children’s Cancer Fund Distinguished Chair. His career focuses on diagnosing and managing blood disorders in children, with leadership roles in national research collaborations.

Education includes:

• Medical degree from the University of Chicago (1970)
• Pediatric residency at Children’s Memorial Hospital, Chicago
• Hematology-oncology fellowship at Children’s Hospital Boston, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and Harvard Medical School.

Research interests span pediatric hematology and oncology, with emphasis on sickle cell disease, anemias, bleeding disorders, immune thrombocytopenia, iron deficiency, and childhood cancer. His work advances treatment approaches and mentors physician-scientists.
