George Perera is an Adjunct Professor and Career Advisory Board Member at the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs, Florida International University, where he teaches courses in digital crimes. He also serves as the Acting Director of the Cybersecurity Master’s program at St. Thomas University School of Law. With over 30 years of service in the Miami-Dade Police Department, he is Commander of the Strategic Innovation and High Technology Crimes Bureau (SIHTCB) and chairs the South Florida Cyber Crime Task Force, the largest of its kind in the U.S.
Education includes a Bachelor of Science from Florida International University, a Master of Public Administration from Lynn University, and a Master’s in Security Studies from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. He holds a NENA Emergency Number Professional (ENP) certification since 2005.
His expertise spans cybersecurity, digital forensics, and technology policy. He serves as Vice Chair of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Computer Crimes and Digital Evidence Committee and chairs the Department of Homeland Security’s SAFECOM Cybersecurity working group. He is a DOJ grant evaluator and a frequent speaker at policy forums.
Perera’s roles include advising on technology adoption, investigating tech-related crimes, and developing innovative policing strategies. His work focuses on integrating cyber defense, law enforcement, and public safety through interdisciplinary collaboration.
