George Christou is Professor of European Politics and Security at the University of Warwick's Department of Politics and International Studies. He was appointed Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor Europe on 1 October 2023. His academic career includes positions at the University of Manchester as Lecturer in European Politics (2001-2003), Research Associate at Manchester Metropolitan University (2003-2004), and Research Associate at Northumbria University (2004-2005) before joining Warwick in August 2005.
Christou earned his first degree in Economics and Public Policy at Leeds Metropolitan University, followed by a Masters in International Studies, a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education, and a PhD in Political Science, all from the University of Sheffield. His extensive research portfolio includes significant EU-funded projects such as EU-GRASP, GR:EEN, PREDICT, and various Horizon 2020 initiatives focused on European security, cyber policy, and internet governance.
Christou's research centers on the EU's role in conflict resolution and peacebuilding, particularly regarding Cyprus and Turkey; European Neighbourhood Policy; Security Governance; EU's role in Internet Governance; Political economy of European and Global Internet Governance; EU Cyber Security Policy; Cyber Diplomacy; and the Geopolitics of Cybersecurity. His work demonstrates a consistent focus on how the EU navigates complex security challenges in both traditional and digital domains, with particular attention to governance structures and policy implementation.
His 15 most recent publications reveal a clear trajectory toward cybersecurity and digital governance, with increasing emphasis on technological sovereignty, cyber diplomacy, and the EU's role in shaping global internet governance. While maintaining his longstanding focus on Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean, his research has evolved to address emerging challenges in cyberspace, reflecting the growing importance of digital dimensions in international relations and security studies.
Christou has supervised 18 PhD students to completion and currently supervises 6 PhD students on topics related to his research interests. He has secured substantial research funding from the EU (including FP7, Horizon 2020, and Horizon Europe), ESRC, NATO, and other sources for projects totaling millions of euros. As Editor of Palgrave's New Security Challenges Series since May 2016, he has shaped scholarly discourse in security studies.
He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules on EU policy-making and Europe and the World, bringing his research expertise directly into the classroom. His work on the ERASMUS+ Jean Monnet Network on European Cyberdiplomacy and leadership roles in Horizon Europe projects demonstrate his ongoing commitment to advancing European integration in the digital age, particularly through capacity-building and democratic deliberation initiatives.
