Andrea Calderaro

Andrea Calderaro serves as a Visiting Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute and holds the position of Associate Professor in International Relations at Cardiff University, where he directs the Centre for Internet and Global Politics and participates in the Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Analytics. His academic journey culminated with a PhD in Social and Political Sciences from the European University Institute.

Calderaro's research focuses on the intersection of technology and international relations, with particular expertise in cybersecurity, cyber diplomacy, transnational internet governance, and digital transformations in the Global South. His work examines how the European Union engages in international cyber cooperation and shapes global cyber norms. He has conducted extensive field research across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Central America, and within EU institutions, bringing a truly global perspective to his scholarship.

His current research agenda centers on Cyber Security Capacity Building in the Global South through ESRC IAA-funded projects including "Decolonizing International Cooperation in the Cyber Domain" (2022-) and "Cybersecurity Capacity Building in the Global South" (2021-). His scholarly output spans co-edited volumes like "Internet Diplomacy: shaping the global politics of cyberspace" (2022) and articles in prestigious journals including Third World Quarterly, Policy and Internet, International Journal of E-Politics, and European Security. As co-Editor of the "Digital Technologies and Global Politics" Book Series at Rowman & Littlefield, he significantly influences the field's scholarly discourse.

Calderaro maintains extensive institutional engagement as a member of the Global Forum of Cyber Expertise (GFCE) Research Board and has served on numerous high-impact advisory bodies including the EU Cyber Capacity Building Task Force, UN Open-Ended Working Group on cybersecurity, UNESCO Internet Universality Program Advisory Board, and the OECD Civil Society Information Society Advisory Council. His research directly informs policy through collaborations with the House of Lords, UK Foreign Office, European Commission, EU Parliament, GIZ, and United Nations.

His scholarly contributions have reached broad audiences through features in BBC, BBC Radio, Al Jazeera "Inside Story", The New York Times, Reuters, The Verge, and other major media outlets, demonstrating the real-world relevance of his work on cyber diplomacy and international security in the digital age.
