George Boys-Stones is a Professor of Ancient Philosophy at the University of Toronto, holding positions in both the Classics and Philosophy departments. He previously taught at Durham University for 20 years before joining Toronto in 2019. His research focuses on post-Hellenistic Platonism and Stoicism, with particular attention to figures like Panaetius, Cicero, Plutarch, Athenagoras, and Clement. Boys-Stones has served as Chair and Graduate Chair since 2023. His academic journey includes a DPhil from Oxford University and a LittD from Cambridge University.
Boys-Stones’ scholarly contributions span edited volumes, translations, and monographs, including Platonist Philosophy 80 BC to AD 250 and The Circle of Socrates. His work explores Middle Platonist theology, Stoic cosmology, and the interplay between metaphysics and religious thought. Recent research addresses topics like the solar corona in ancient texts and debates over divine providence in philosophical traditions.
His administrative service includes leadership roles at Toronto, while his teaching and research interests encompass ancient ethics, cosmology, and the philosophical legacies of Plato and his followers. Boys-Stones’ interdisciplinary approach bridges textual analysis with historical context, making significant contributions to understanding late antique philosophical developments.
