Brad Inwood is the William Lampson Professor of Philosophy and Classics at Yale University. He has held primary appointments in both departments since 2015, focusing on ancient philosophy, particularly Stoicism and Presocratic thought. His career includes roles as Department Chair at the University of Toronto, editor of Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy (2007–2015), and founder of the Collaborative Program in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy at Toronto. He has held prestigious fellowships at the National Humanities Center and the Centre for Advanced Study in the Behavioural Sciences, along with the Canada Research Chair in Ancient Philosophy.
In education, Inwood earned a BA in Classics from Brock University (Ontario), an MA from the University of Toronto, and a PhD in Classics from Toronto with a specialization in ancient philosophy. His postdoctoral work included a Mellon Fellowship at Stanford.
Research interests center on Stoic ethics, Hellenistic philosophy, and Presocratic cosmology. Key publications include Later Stoicism, Ethics and Human Action in Early Stoicism, and editions of Seneca’s philosophical works. His work bridges textual analysis with historical context, emphasizing the practical and ethical dimensions of ancient thought.
Awards and honors include the Canada Research Chair, National Humanities Center fellowship, and leadership in academic publishing. His contributions to Stoic scholarship, including translations and critical editions, have shaped contemporary understanding of Roman Stoicism and its evolution.
