George Barreto is an Associate Professor at the University of Limerick, affiliated with the Department of Biological Sciences, Bernal Institute, Health Research Institute, and Limerick Digital Cancer Research Centre. His research focuses on hormonal regulation of mitochondrial functions in the brain, neurodegenerative diseases, and drug development targeting mitochondria.
He holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from Complutense University of Madrid (2009) and completed postdoctoral training at Stanford University (2009–present). His expertise spans neuroendocrinology, neurobiology, and neurodegenerative diseases, with a focus on sex differences in brain function.
His research interests include the role of androgens/estrogens in neuroprotection, lipid metabolism in neuroimmune responses, and the therapeutic potential of synthetic hormones like tibolone. He has contributed to over 375 publications and actively reviews grants for national and international funding bodies.
- Key Research Themes: Mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, and drug repurposing.
- Awards: Postdoctoral Fellowship and WERC/FENS PhD Fellowship.
- Collaborations: Global networks investigating glial cell biology, neuroprotective agents, and nutraceutical interventions.
