Dr. Geoffrey Gray is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry, Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, University of Queensland. He also holds affiliations as an Affiliate Fellow at the University of Sydney’s Laureate, Race and Ethnicity in the Global South, and as an Adjunct Lecturer at the Strategic Centre for Defence Studies, Australian National University. His career includes a Senior Research Fellow role at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Studies (1996–2013).
Gray’s research spans anthropology, history, and indigenous studies, focusing on colonial rule, whiteness studies, race and citizenship, and the cattle industry in the Northern Territory. His work often intersects with biography, academic freedom, and political tensions in post-colonial contexts.
His recent publications, such as the 2024 Oceania article on post-war Papua New Guinea and the 2023 book Chicanery, highlight transnational academic governance, institutional politics, and historical analysis of anthropology’s role in colonial and wartime settings. These works emphasize Anglophone intellectual networks, ethical research practices, and surveillance in academia.
Gray is currently available for supervision and contributes to academic discourse through editorial roles, including co-editing the Journal of Historical Biography (2014). His research is supported by the ARC Linkage Grant for the project Serving our Country, examining Indigenous contributions to Australian defense.
