Bryce Barker is a Professor in Archaeology at the University of Southern Queensland with extensive research experience focusing on Indigenous pasts in the Australasian region. His work combines archaeological and anthropological approaches with a specific emphasis on Australian Aboriginal Hunter-Gatherer Societies.
Dr. Barker's research is primarily community-based, conducted in partnership with Indigenous communities across multiple regions. His current projects span Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, the central Queensland coast, and the western Gulf of Papua in Papua New Guinea. His academic background includes an undergraduate degree in Anthropology and Honours and PhD in Archaeology from the University of Queensland (completed in 1996).
Barker's research interests center on reconstructing Indigenous histories through archaeological evidence while challenging outdated Eurocentric views of static Indigenous societies. His recent work has focused on uncovering extensive prehistoric trade networks across Oceania and investigating the archaeological evidence of colonial violence in Australia, particularly through the study of Native Mounted Police camps.
His publication trends reveal a strong focus on Indigenous material culture, historical trauma, and cross-cultural interactions. The archaeological evidence from sites like Walufeni Cave in Papua New Guinea has demonstrated sophisticated long-distance trade networks extending back 3,200 years, while his work on Native Police camps provides physical evidence of Australia's colonial frontier conflicts.
Barker has received funding from the Australian Research Council for multiple projects, including an archaeological study of the Queensland Native Mounted Police in collaboration with Indigenous communities and other researchers such as Lynley Wallis and Heather Burke.
Barker actively engages with community knowledge and oral traditions, working closely with Indigenous elders to document and interpret historical sites. His research has significant implications for understanding Australia's colonial history and the ongoing impacts of frontier violence on contemporary Indigenous communities.
