Dr. Gene Bukhman is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and an Associate Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He directs the Center for Integration Science in Global Health Equity and the Program on Global Noncommunicable Disease (NCDs) and Social Change. His work focuses on equitable healthcare delivery for severe chronic NCDs in low-resource settings, particularly through the PEN-Plus strategy, which decentralizes and integrates care for conditions like type 1 diabetes, sickle cell disease, and congenital heart disease. He has advised the Rwanda Ministry of Health and co-chaired the Lancet Commission on Reframing NCDs and Injuries for the Poorest Billion. His research spans epidemiology, anthropology, and policy, with over 125 peer-reviewed publications. He received the 2023 World Heart Federation Award for his contributions to global cardiovascular health.
Research interests include health equity, NCDI Poverty (noncommunicable diseases and injuries among the poorest billion), and integration science. His work emphasizes culturally responsive, community-driven solutions to healthcare challenges in resource-limited settings. He leads the 27-country NCDI Poverty Network, translating research into actionable strategies for universal health coverage.
Key achievements include the PEN-Plus model, which trains mid-level providers and strengthens healthcare systems in over a dozen countries. He has collaborated with governments and NGOs to implement scalable solutions, such as task-shifting training for heart failure management in Rwanda and Malawi. His publications highlight the burden of NCDs in extreme poverty and advocate for systemic changes to address health disparities.
