Dr Gemma Xu is a Lecturer in Economics at Swansea University's School of Social Sciences. She holds a PhD from Cardiff University (2018) and previously worked as a Research Fellow/Associate at Sussex and Cardiff Universities. Her research focuses on regional development, digital technologies, semiconductor industry strategies, tourism economics, and the Welsh economy. She leads the ONS-funded 'Measuring the Digital Economy' project and co-investigates the ESRC-funded low-carbon economy project. Her work integrates CGE modelling and input-output analysis.
Her research portfolio includes projects like the £1.5m ERDF Superfast Broadband initiative and the £43m CSConnected semiconductor project. Publications appear in Regional Studies, Annals of Tourism Research, and Welsh Economic Review. She teaches econometrics and industrial economics modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Dr Xu specializes in Stata programming and confidential datasets from ONS/HMRC. She is actively engaged in projects exploring digital technologies in manufacturing servitization, Cardiff City Region's entrepreneurial ecosystems, and European semiconductor policy strategies.
