Gemma Sharpe is an Assistant Professor in Liberal Arts with expertise in modern and contemporary South Asian art, Cold War art histories, and museum studies. She holds a PhD from The Graduate Center, City University of New York; an MFA from Goldsmiths College, London; and a BFA from Nottingham University. Her current research examines postcolonial artistic engagement with nationalism and state institutions in Pakistan and pre-1971 Bangladesh through her in-progress book Modernist Agencies: Art and Cold War Politics in Pakistan.
Her work has been supported by prestigious organizations such as the Asian Cultural Council, Modernist Studies Association, and Paul Mellon Centre. She served as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Graduate Center, CUNY (2019-21), and received the Getty/ACLS Postdoctoral Fellowship (2022-23). Publications appear in Art History, ARTMargins, and international exhibition catalogs.
Research trends in her articles focus on transnational art networks, Cold War cultural politics, and institutional critiques, with recent work addressing modernist movements in Lebanon/Syria/Turkey and Gulf War artistic responses. Awards and grants highlight her contributions to redefining postcolonial art historiography.
Her interdisciplinary approach bridges art theory, legal studies, and curatorial practice, reflected in projects like Iqbal Geoffrey v. MoMA (2022) and Radical Revivals (2019). No formal student advisement details are listed, but her postdoctoral role suggests involvement in academic mentorship.
