Dr. Gemma Mitchell is an Associate Professor in English Trusts Law at the University of East Anglia (UEA), based in the School of Law. She returned to UEA as a Lecturer in 2016 after holding positions at the University of Birmingham. Her academic background includes a PhD in Law from Birmingham and an LLM in Child and Family Law from University College London.
Her research focuses on reconciling paid work with caring responsibilities, particularly examining UK legislation like maternity, paternity, and shared parental leave. She explores how these policies address gender inequality in workplaces and households. Mitchell actively contributes to policy debates through submissions to parliamentary committees and media engagements.
Recent activities include presenting at the Socio-Legal Studies Association Annual Conference (2022) and organizing stakeholder workshops on flexible working policies. She has peer-reviewed for journals like Social Inclusion and participated in government consultations, including the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy’s 'Making flexible working the default' initiative (2021).
Mitchell teaches Law of Trusts and English Legal Process. She supervises students interested in work-life balance policy, gender inequality, and related legal frameworks. Her scholarship emphasizes intersectional analysis of caregiving and labor rights, with a focus on marginalized groups.
