Dr. Charlotte Bendall is an Associate Professor at the Birmingham Law School, University of Birmingham, specializing in family law and socio-legal studies. She previously held a Lecturer position at the University of Essex and completed her doctoral research at Birmingham. Her work focuses on family law reform, intergenerational relationships, and gender dynamics in legal contexts. She leads the Family Law Reform Now project, collaborating with academics, practitioners, and policymakers to address key challenges in family law.
Dr. Bendall’s research includes examining grandparents' experiences in child arrangements, financial practices in modern relationships, and the impact of legal frameworks on gender roles. She has contributed to edited collections and policy submissions, including a 2024 anthology on family law reform. Her recent work explores shared parental leave inequities and cohabitation rights under Labour’s proposed reforms.
Her academic credentials include a PhD from the University of Birmingham, an MSc in Socio-legal Studies from Bristol, and a BA in Jurisprudence from Oxford. Prior to academia, she worked as a solicitor and assistant editor of legal publications like Archbold. She actively supervises doctoral students in family law and has secured grants, including from the Socio-legal Studies Association.
Dr. Bendall’s advocacy extends to parliamentary evidence submissions on cohabitation rights and older people’s legal protections. She co-founded the Family Law Reform Now network, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue on legal reforms. Her research consistently bridges legal theory with practical societal challenges, emphasizing equitable outcomes in family law.
