Toni Spencer is a Principal Lecturer in Law at the University of Sunderland, appointed in 2019 following nearly two decades in legal practice. She transitioned to academia after qualifying as a solicitor in 2011, specializing in property law before expanding into family and criminal law. Promoted to Clinic Director of the Sunderland Student Law Clinic in 2022, she emphasizes experiential learning, ensuring students grasp professional legal expectations while contributing meaningfully to client cases. Her roles also include Personal Academic Tutor and Mental Health Champion for the Law School, reflecting her commitment to student well-being and professional development.
Teaching focuses on Land Law (LAW272), Property Law and Practice (LAWM72), and clinical modules like the Sunderland Student Law Clinic (LAW340) and Advanced Legal Practice (LAWM70). Research interests span residential property law, third-party rights, cohabitation disputes, and socio-legal reforms tied to the Equality Act 2010. She authored a revision guide for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) focused on Land Law.
Awarded Law Teacher of the Year 2024, Spencer also holds a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. Her advocacy extends to mental health support, serving as a mental health first aider and champion within the Law School.
