Gavin Halbert serves as Visiting Professor at the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences (SIPBS), University of Strathclyde, where he directs the Formulation Unit responsible for pharmaceutical development of novel anti-cancer agents for clinical trials. With over 40 years at SIPBS since joining as lecturer in 1984, he has pharmaceutical oversight for more than 20 new chemical entities in human trials.
His educational background includes:
- Pharmacy degree (1979), University of Strathclyde
- PhD in Physiochemical Aspects of Anti-Cancer Drug Targeting Systems (1984), University of Strathclyde
Research focuses on advanced pharmaceutical formulation, drug targeting systems for cancer chemotherapy (including synthetic Low Density Lipoprotein platforms), GMP production for Phase I trials, and lyophilisation technology. His fingerprint analysis reveals expertise in drug delivery, tablet formulation, polymer science, and dissolution kinetics within pharmacological sciences.
Recent publications demonstrate emerging trends in digital design for sustainable medicines development and biophysical characterisation of novel antibody therapeutics, reflecting convergence of pharmaceutical engineering with cancer immunotherapy.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (2024)
- Fellow of Royal Pharmaceutical Society (FRPS) (2024)
With over £10 million in career grant funding, he leads major initiatives including the DHSC Future Manufacturing Vaccine Hub (2023-2028) and Cancer Research UK Formulation Unit (2020-2025). He supervises postgraduate students and teaches the Qualified Persons training course since 1991.
The Formulation Unit under his directorship since 1992 operates specialized GMP facilities for manufacturing clinical trial materials, supported by equipment including Agilent HPLC systems and collaborative networks with CRUK and pharmaceutical industry partners.
