Dr. David Breen is a Senior Teaching Fellow at the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences (SIPBS) within the Faculty of Science at the University of Strathclyde. His dual-role position integrates advanced medicinal chemistry research with innovative pharmacy education, actively contributing to SIPBS workshops and professional development initiatives.
His research spans medicinal chemistry, drug design, and chemical biology, specializing in synthesizing therapeutic compounds targeting kinase pathways (IKKα for cancer/inflammation) and anti-trypanosomal agents. Concurrently, he pioneers educational methodologies through gamification (e.g., Pharmopoly) and digital mimics for remote learning, transforming M.Pharm. curriculum delivery and student engagement.
Analysis of his 2014-2024 publications reveals a strategic convergence: molecular drug discovery for cellular signaling pathways intersects with educational technology innovation. His IKKα inhibitor work (2024) and gamification studies (2019-2021) exemplify this synergy, positioning him at the nexus of biomedical research and pedagogical advancement.
As Principal Investigator for the University of Glasgow-funded project "Novel inhibitors of the molecular chaperone Hsp90" (2015-2017), he demonstrated research leadership in securing competitive grants. While formal student advisees aren't documented, his Senior Teaching Fellow role entails extensive mentorship within Strathclyde's pharmacy programs. Professional activities include keynote presentations at Science@Strathclyde workshops and leadership in virtual drug discovery initiatives.
