Gary Patti

Professor Gary Patti holds multiple roles at Washington University, including Senior Director of the Center for Metabolomics and Isotope Tracing, Director of the Clinical Research Core in Medicine, and Director of Faculty Affairs in Chemistry. He is a Professor of Chemistry, Genetics, and Medicine within the School of Medicine, and holds the endowed Michael and Tana Powell Professorship in Chemistry. His interdisciplinary work bridges chemical and biological sciences, focusing on metabolism in health and disease.

Professor Patti's research spans three key areas: Cancer Biology, Technology Development, and Computational Biology. His lab explores how cancer cells reprogram metabolism to support proliferation, develops advanced tools for metabolomics and exposomics, and integrates multi-omics data to understand disease mechanisms. Notable contributions include the use of zebrafish models and stable isotope tracing to study inter-tissue metabolic interactions.

His team has pioneered technologies such as PeakDetective and DecoID for metabolomics data analysis, and employs mass spectrometry imaging to map metabolic fluxes in tumor ecosystems. Recent work also involves leveraging single-cell metabolomics and spatial transcriptomics to study metabolic processes at the cellular level.

Awards include the Biemann Medal (2024), Pew Biomedical Scholars Award (2015), and Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award (2015). He co-leads a $50M NIH-funded multi-omics initiative to study environmental chemicals' roles in disease, emphasizing underrepresented populations. His lab facilities include advanced mass spectrometry instrumentation and zebrafish research tanks.
