Galina Hale is a Professor of Economics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), where she also serves as Co-Director of the Center for Analytical Finance (CAFIN). She previously worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and held academic positions at Yale University, Stanford, and UC Berkeley. Her research focuses on climate finance, international financial stability, and sustainable food systems. Hale is affiliated with the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), and the Central Bank Research Association (CEBRA). She co-edits the Review of World Economies and serves on editorial boards of several economics journals. Her work bridges macroeconomic policy, climate risk, and financial system resilience. Hale also leads initiatives like Food System Innovations, aiming to transition the global food system toward sustainability.
Education: Ph.D. in Economics from UC Berkeley (advisor: Barry Eichengreen), MA from New Economic School (Russia), and BA from Moscow State University. Early career included roles as a consultant for the Russian Ministry of Finance and editor at the Russian Central Bank's news agency.
