Dr. Sofia Galani is an Assistant Professor at Panteion University of Athens (since 2021) and Scientific Advisor to the Hellenic Parliament's Scientific Council (since 2022). Previously, she held academic roles at the University of Bristol, including Senior Lecturer (2021), Lecturer (2015-2020), and Teaching Assistant (2013-2015). She holds an LLB from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, an LLM in Public Law, and a PhD in International Law from the University of Bristol.
Her research focuses on maritime security, law of the sea, human rights, and terrorism. Notable works include Hostages and Human Rights: Towards a Victim-Centred Approach (2021) and co-editing Maritime Security and the Law of the Sea: Help or Hindrance? (2020). She advises the UNODC’s Global Maritime Crime Programme and contributed to the Geneva Declaration of Human Rights at Sea.
Recent publications address hybrid warfare, climate change impacts on Arctic maritime security, and EU’s role in balancing maritime security and human rights. She emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to legal challenges in maritime domains, particularly in polar regions and conflict zones.
Galani actively engages with international organizations, serving on the Non-Executive Board of Advisors for Human Rights at Sea and collaborating globally on maritime governance projects. Her work bridges legal frameworks with practical governance, advocating for victim-centric policies in high-risk maritime scenarios.
